HONG KONG--Hong Kong shares closed lower Wednesday, led by slumping financial shares.
The blue-chip Hang Seng Index fell 213.08 points, or 0.9%, to 24315.02 after trading between 24266.68 and 24551.74 during the session. The turnover totaled 64.66 billion Hong Kong dollars (US$8.34 billion) compared with HK$64.04 billion Tuesday.
Financial stocks were led lower by shares of HSBC Holdings PLC (0005.HK), which slumped for a third straight day in the wake of allegations it aided tax evasion. The stock declined 2.2% to HK$70.25 (US$9.06), bringing losses this week to nearly 4%.
Mainland financial shares also traded lower amid a string of weak Chinese data this week reflecting an economy struggling with lackluster domestic demand. Shares of Industrial & Commercial Bank of China Ltd. (1398.HK), China's largest bank, fell 0.9% to HK$5.51.
